THE ORIENTEER

Oh God, the needle's spinning now
And I have lost my way.
I cannot tell what's up or down,
Where did I go astray?

Paths stretch out this way and that,
Their destinations foggy.
This here's a hard and rocky road
But this one swamped and soggy.
And this descends to dark profound
Uncertain shadows lurk there.
And this through tearing thorn and scrub,
The lairs of wolf and bear.
And there are steps which curve around
The precipice's edge.
Where avalanche may rumble down
And sweep me from the ledge.

My compass cannot be my guide
It has no use, no worth.
Level must the compass lie
To ever find true North.
